About Akroprint
Market survey data indicate that over 18 million adult, circumcised men in the United States would consider a regenerative therapy to restore their missing foreskin, and appear ready to pay a significant sum to do so. The foreskin is a crucial part of male sexual biology, and circumcised men that desire foreskin reconstruction do so primarily for restoration of normal sexual function, but also cite restoration of body image, aesthetics, and a regained sense of power over one’s person as their motivation.
Akroprint is the first and only group in the world developing 3D bioprinting technology for human foreskin reconstruction. Our mission is to reverse circumcision, a dream of many men since at least classical antiquity. Now, with the free flow of information, the demand for circumcision reversal is higher than ever before. Currently, the only existing techniques available to men who wish to undo their circumcision are surgical grafting and skin expansion. These methods are imperfect and only result in a rough approximation of the foreskin, lack natural neural and vascular structures, can take many years to complete, and can be painful.
This is where Akroprint comes in. Simply said, we intend to use 3D bioprinting technologies to fabricate personalized foreskins, thus allowing a man’s circumcision to be reversed. 3D printing has found a great deal of utility in the field of biomedicine, with 3D printing and rapid prototyping techniques being used to fabricate prosthetic limbs, biosensors, microvascular systems for organs, and much more. Similarly, Tissue Engineering and Biomaterials Science have experienced exciting innovations over the past decades.
While an acceptable replacement for reconstruction could potentially be produced using decellularized donor tissue, donor tissues of all types are scarce, especially for this application. Currently there is no solution that restores full natural function, let alone one that is or could be scalable to millions of men. Combined, these approaches of Tissue Engineering and Biomaterials Science seek to repair or replace damaged tissues and organs by circumventing the crippling scarcity of human donor tissues. The integration of 3D printing techniques into this domain allows for the fabrication of highly complex, reproducible tissue engineered constructs, as well as a large degree of control in their personalization, which is not necessarily possible in traditional biofabrication techniques or with human donor tissues.
